SIGDOC @ ODU

We are very happy to announce that Chelsea Swick, Treasurer and Secretary, has been admitted to the Doctoral program at Kent State University where she will pursue research in Rhetoric and Composition. Chelsea has served as SIGDOC ODU’s treasurer since our initial meetings to get this organization up and running, way back in December of 2009. She also gladly took on the duties of secretary during the Spring semester. With her help and dedication, SIGDOC ODU was recognized by both ACM and by the Old Dominion University SGA. She has also served as a research assistant in the CeME Lab.

Chelsea’s Master’s thesis project performed empirical research on the role and perceptions of audience in the first year composition classroom for both instructors and students.  Through grounded theory and phenomenological studies, she found that what instructors are trying to teach about the importance of audience awareness is not transferred into the values of the students. It is valuable work that will serve as a strong foundation as she takes the next step in her education and professionalization.

Good luck, Chelsea! Even though we’re sad to you see you go, we are proud of you!
